Dignitas at McGill
Dignitas Youth - SSMU was established in 2006 as the McGill University chapter of Dignitas Youth. We support Dignitas International as part of an initiative to educate and engage our community for a greater international response to AIDS. In our first year we hosted grilled cheese fundraisers, held our first ever Race for Dignity, promoted prevention with condom-valentines, worked with other HIV/AIDS-concerned groups on campus to make World AIDS Day a success, and more. Since then we have held samosa sales, continued our involvement in World AIDS Day, held successful 'Red Parties' at Benelux, and held our fourth Race for Dignity. We are looking forward to another year of success in 2011-2012!
AIDS has already claimed more lives than any other epidemic in human history. In the next 24 hours alone, another 8,000 people will die due to AIDS-related illness. In response to this emergency, a group of international health experts founded Dignitas International, a medical humanitarian organization dedicated to providing a quality of life with dignity for children, youth and families affected by HIV/AIDS in the developing world.
Dignitas International is responding in three ways:
WE DO: by implementing community-based care programs, we increase access to comprehensive prevention, treatment, care and support for people living with HIV/AIDS.
WE LEARN: by conducting intervention research to monitor and evaluate our programs, and to answer specific research questions, we continually learn how to improve HIV/AIDS programming in diverse cultural and economic settings.
WE SHARE: by sharing what we learn with other organizations, governments and citizens, we improve the international response to global HIV/AIDS.
Dignitas established its first project in Zomba District, Malawi, in 2004.
Dignitas Youth is a growing global network of young leaders engaging their communities in the international response to AIDS.
To strengthen and improve the international response to the AIDS pandemic by equipping youth to effect change today, and empowering them to become the influential global leaders of tomorrow.
To provide meaningful opportunities for youth to take action against global AIDS by:
- Facilitating community involvement around HIV/AIDS issues;
- Connecting youth to a global network of young leaders;
- Creating innovative programming to raise funds for and awareness about HIV/AIDS and the
initiatives of Dignitas International.
